The Enugu State Government has approved an improved monthly allowance for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members serving in the state, with payment expected to commence at the end of November.
Governor Peter Mbah disclosed this on Friday through the Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Lloyd Ekweremadu, who represented him at the swearing-in ceremony of the 2026 Batch C Stream II corps members at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Awgu.
Mbah said he had forwarded the details of the corps members to the Accountant-General for processing of the improved allowance.
“I am pleased to announce, on behalf of His Excellency, that the Governor of Enugu State has just approved an improved state allowance payment for corps members. I forwarded all your details to the Accountant-General last week, and the payment will commence at the end of this month,” he said.
The governor also disclosed that his administration had embarked on infrastructural improvements at the orientation camp, including renovation of existing facilities, water reticulation, an additional borehole and reconnection to electricity.
He added that new accommodation facilities for corps members and staff, as well as an auditorium, were under construction.
According to him, the interventions were aimed at making the service year comfortable and memorable for corps members deployed to the state.
Mbah urged the corps members to demonstrate discipline, commitment and professionalism at their places of primary assignment, while contributing meaningfully to the development of their host communities.
He also encouraged them to take advantage of the NYSC Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development programme to acquire practical skills capable of sustaining them after their service year.
Earlier, the NYSC State Coordinator, Oluwakemi Awolola, disclosed that 1,900 prospective corps members, comprising 862 males and 1,038 females, had registered for the orientation exercise.
Awolola urged them to take the orientation course seriously, stressing that discipline and obedience to camp regulations were essential to a successful service year.
“Discipline remains the bedrock of the NYSC scheme. Strict adherence to camp rules and regulations, respect for constituted authority and observance of the NYSC bye-laws are mandatory,” she said.
She commended the state government for supporting the scheme and particularly appreciated the Community and Social Development Agency (CSDA), for facilitating water reticulation across the camp hostels and rehabilitation of toilet facilities.
Also speaking, the Executive Chairman of Awgu Local Government Area, Uchenna Okolo, welcomed the corps members and urged them to leave positive footprints in their host communities.
He charged them to be worthy ambassadors of their families, Enugu State and Nigeria.
Justice A.O. Onovo, who represented the Chief Judge of Enugu State, Justice Raymond Ozoemena, urged the corps members to uphold good character, stressing that the greatest legacy they could leave behind was a good name.
