Matawalle FC of Doma on Saturday  emerged champions of the 9th edition of the ACP Yakubu Agabi Mailafia Peace and Unity Football Tournament, following a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Greater Tomorrow FC of Lafia.

The keenly contested final, played at the Daddere community football field, was decided in dramatic fashion as Matawalle FC scored the winning goal less than one minute into the encounter, setting the tone for an intense battle between the two sides.

Despite sustained pressure and spirited attacking play from Greater Tomorrow FC, Matawalle FC held their ground and defended resolutely until the final whistle, showcasing quality grassroots football and tactical discipline.

The tournament, which lasted three months, featured 32 teams drawn from Nasarawa South and North Senatorial Districts, all competing for pride, unity and glory.

Speaking at the grand finale, the sponsor of the tournament, ACP Yakubu Agabi Mailafia, expressed satisfaction with the level of talent displayed, describing his investment in grassroots football as worthwhile.

“What we have seen today confirms that investing in grassroots football is never a mistake. The talents on display are clear evidence that the future of Nigerian football lies at this level,” Mailafia said.

He further revealed that preparations were already underway for the 10th edition of the tournament, promising an even bigger and better package.

“Plans for the next edition have already started, and we are determined to raise the standard with improved incentives and organisation,” he added.

Also speaking, Chairman of the tournament, Mohammed Dan’azumi, said the competition had grown into a recognised brand dedicated to discovering and nurturing young football talents.

“The ACP Mailafia tournament has become a brand with a clear mandate to unearth and develop talents. We are calling for stronger partnerships, especially with government and corporate bodies, to sustain and expand what is being done here,” Dan’azumi stated.

His position was supported by Barrister Husseini Umar from Bauchi State, who stressed the importance of collaboration in strengthening grassroots sports development.

On his part, the Sangarin Daddere, Abubakar Sa’id, commended the organiser and reaffirmed the commitment of traditional institutions to the initiative.

“The support of traditional rulers for this tournament is non-negotiable. ACP Yakubu Agabi Mailafia is a transformative agent, and Daddere community is proud to be associated with this initiative,” he said.

The event climaxed with the presentation of individual and corporate awards. Matawalle FC carted home a cash prize of ₦1.3 million, while runners-up Greater Tomorrow FC received ₦1 million.
