Hundreds of students in the University of Calabar on Tuesday, 2nd July 2024, protested over poor amenities in the institution.
The protesting students who moved round the institution and adjourning streets converged at entrance of the institution.
They complained about lack of electricity supply in the institution as well as water supply.
The protesting students who are fondly called malabites and malabresses largely comprise residents of Halls 4, 5, and 6.
They displayed placards and chanted slogans to express their frustration over the deplorable living conditions.
Livinson Arikpo, the Governor General of Malabor, and Comr. Matthias, the Spirit Head of Malabor, addressed the crowd to assuage their concerns.
Arikpo acknowledged the challenges faced by the residents and promised to take immediate action to restore power and water supply to the affected areas.
Matthias, the Spirit Head of Malabor, urged the protesters to remain calm and peaceful, assuring them that their grievances would be addressed promptly.
The management of the institution have not formally responded to the concerns of the protesting students.
Recently, the students protested against the astronomical increase in the school fees which severely impacted on less privileged students.
