Inter Miami’s coach, Javier Mascherano, has expressed his displeasure with Lionel Messi’s suspension.

The former Liverpool and Barcelona star lashed out at Major League Soccer’s administration for suspending his star player.

Messi, 38, did not play in the Herons’ MLS match against FC Cincinnati on Saturday.

After the game, Messi’s former teammate and now manager, Mascherano, hit out at the MLS while speaking with reporters at Chase Stadium.

The MLS commissioner released a statement 24 hours before the game announcing Messi’s suspension.

“I don’t like to speak about other people’s decisions, but it’s strange when something is said one day and the opposite happens the next.

“Messi has played an enormous number of matches. When it’s about selling tickets or filling stadiums, no one complains.

“But now that we had a home game, he’s suspended? Would they have done the same if we were playing away? It’s frustrating,” he said (via GOAL).

Messi and his former Barça teammate, Jordi Alba, shunned the MLS All-Star match last week despite being in the squad.

They were later handed a one-game suspension in accordance with the MLS rules.
