Senator Sunday Marshall Katung, representing Kaduna South Senatorial District, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Nurse Mary Habila, describing the incident as a tragic loss that has thrown her family and the wider community into mourning.
On June 26, 2026, Mary Habila was found dead in her room in the residence of the Minister of works, David Umahi at Uburu, Ebonyi State.
In a statement, the senator said he received the news “with profound shock and deep sadness,” adding that the incident had “left her family, friends, and our entire community in mourning, casting a deep shadow of grief over Kaduna South and beyond.”
On behalf of his family and the people of Kaduna South Senatorial District, Katung extended his condolences to the deceased’s family.
“I extend my deepest condolences to her parents, immediate family, loved ones, and all who are grieving this painful loss,” he said, praying that God would grant Mary Habila eternal rest and give her loved ones “the strength and fortitude to bear this irreparable loss.”
The lawmaker stressed that the death of “any innocent life is a tragedy that should concern us all,” and called on the relevant authorities to carry out what he described as “a thorough, impartial, and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding this unfortunate incident.”
According to him, such an investigation is necessary to “establish the truth, ensure that justice is done, and provide the family with the closure they deserve, while fully respecting their wishes and preserving the integrity of the process.”
Katung disclosed that he has remained in contact with the deceased’s parents since learning of the incident, assuring them of his support throughout the process.
“Since learning of this tragic event, I have remained in close contact with Miss Mary’s parents and have assured them of my unwavering commitment, and that of my office, to ensuring that they receive fairness, dignity, and every necessary support as the appropriate authorities discharge their responsibilities,” he said.
He added, “I remain committed to seeing that this matter is handled with the seriousness, sensitivity, and fairness it deserves until a just and satisfactory resolution is achieved.”
The senator also appealed for calm, urging members of the public to avoid actions or comments that could heighten tensions while investigations are ongoing.
“At this difficult time, I appeal to all our people to remain calm, exercise restraint, and refrain from actions, comments, or speculation that may inflame tensions or undermine the peace and stability of our communities,” he said.
While acknowledging the grief surrounding the incident, Katung urged Nigerians to allow law enforcement and other relevant institutions to perform their duties without interference.
He further called on the public, political leaders, members of the media, and well-wishers to respect the wishes of the bereaved family.
“The family has made it clear that they do not wish this painful moment to be further compounded by unnecessary intrusion, public recrimination, or speculation,” he said, urging “my distinguished colleagues in the National Assembly, friends, well-wishers, members of the media, and all those within and outside Nigeria who have reached out in concern and solidarity” to honour the family’s request for privacy.
Katung prayed for the peaceful repose of Mary Habila’s soul and for divine comfort for her family and all those mourning her passing.
