Since the beginning of this year, Nigeria has had some lavish celebrity weddings, but it’s already time for the next one. This time, it’s billionaire businessman, Dr Taiwo Olayinka Afolabi who is set for what promises to be the next level of big fat weddings. Come October, Mariam Abiola Afolabi, the first daughter of Nigeria’s maritime mogul, will marry her heartthrob. The Afolabi family has kept most details under wraps but rumours are rife, and the leaked details greatly excite many members of Lagos social establishment.

Since her appointment in 2018 as Executive Director, SIFAX Group, Mariam has recoiled into her cocoon, and stayed off the radar. But her decision to quit spinsterhood and tie the nuptial knot with her boyfriend of years has provided her friends with oxygen as they are upbeat and ready to groove with the bride-to-be who used to run The Style Café, a lifestyle complex, alll thanks to Mariam’s billionaire dad who is well known for not doing things in a half measure. The business tycoon will be hosting the high and mighty to his daughter’s traditional wedding in mid-October in Lagos. The exquisite wedding —holding at the prestigious Marriott Hotel in Ikeja GRA, Lagos— is not for everyone as the guests’ list has been pruned to just 150 quality individuals.

The solemnisation, taking place before the year runs to an end, will be a foreign destination wedding. The initial plan was to have the white wedding in Dubai, United Arabs Emirate. But with the present travel restriction placed on Nigerians by the Gulf nation, the Afolabis have opted for an undisclosed European country with invitation — to be delivered from next week—restricted to very selected guests.
