The Maritime Correspondents’ Organisation of Nigeria (MARCON) and the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) have pledged to deepen their collaboration in advancing the interests of the maritime sector.
The commitment was made when the MARCON President, Ismail Aniemu, recently led members of the organisation’s Executive on a courtesy visit to the President-General of MWUN, Francis Bunu.
Aniemu said the relationship between the two organisations remained important to the maritime industry, stressing that a strong and united maritime workforce was essential to the growth and development of the sector.
He commended the union leadership for the strides recorded under its administration, particularly the progress made through Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBAs), describing the achievements as significant to workers and their families.
According to him, the union leadership was doing well and continued to advance the interests of maritime workers.
Aniemu assured MWUN of MARCON’s continued support through professional and factual reportage that would highlight the union’s achievements and draw public attention to issues affecting maritime workers.
He also informed the MWUN President-General of MARCON’s forthcoming conference on sustainable fishing in Nigeria, scheduled for September 30, 2026, at Rockview Hotel, Apapa, Lagos.
Responding, Bunu commended MARCON for its professionalism and courage in reporting issues without fear or favour, particularly its commitment to “telling truth to power” and presenting issues as they were.
He said MWUN would continue to work for the benefit of its members, adding that improved welfare remained central to the union’s responsibilities.
Bunu stressed that the primary responsibility of a workers’ union was to speak for and protect the interests of its members.
He also charged journalists to remain factual and fearless in the discharge of their duties.
“Always report the facts. Don’t fear anyone. That’s how you build a nation,” he said.
The MWUN President-General assured MARCON of the union’s continued collaboration, stressing that the doors of MWUN would always remain open to the organisation.
