Many wouldn’t know Portugal without Ronaldo – Minister

Portuguese Minister of Economy, Manuel Castro Almeida, has said many people might not know Portugal exists if not for Cristiano Ronaldo.

According to Almeida, the former Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus forward is the most popular person in Portugal.

Ronaldo has been at the centre of controversy following his departure from the Portugal national team’s training camp amid an alleged disagreement with head coach Jorge Jesus.

The Portuguese veteran chose to leave the camp following remarks made by coach Jorge Jesus during a press conference ahead of their UEFA Nations League victory over Denmark.

“Many people only know Portugal thanks to Cristiano Ronaldo,” the Minister of Economy said.

Almeida maintained that Ronaldo needs to be part of the Portugal national team going forward, arguing that the 41-year-old is the biggest asset the country has at its disposal.

He said, via Foot Mercato: “It would be good if Portugal could continue to count on this asset. Ronaldo has a huge impact on the projection and promotion of the Portugal brand. He is the most famous person in Portugal; many people only know Portugal thanks to him.”

Meanwhile, Portugal have won every match they have played under their new manager, Jorge Jesus. They defeated Norway 2-1 in their final group-stage game of the UEFA Nations League on Sunday night.
