A tragic accident yesterday morning has reportedly claimed multiple lives in Zaria, Kaduna State, following head-on collision involving two fuel tankers and two other vehicles.
Source said the collision triggered a massive explosion which further aggravated the auto crash.
A witness account said the crash occurred at about 8:30 a.m. near the Rochas Foundation School, along the Kaduna-Kano Expressway.
The impact caused both tankers to erupt in flames, with thick plumes of smoke visible several kilometres away.
While the exact number of casualties could not be immediately confirmed, but some witnesses claimed that some people might have died at the scene.
One of the drivers was said to have sustained injuries and was rushed to the hospital.
A Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, confirmed the incident, noting that rescue operations were still ongoing as of the time of filing this report.
“Medical and security teams, including operatives of FRSC, police, and fire service personnel, swiftly responded to the incident.
“They cordoned off the area and diverted traffic to alternative routes to prevent further accidents and allow rescue operations to continue”, the source said, adding that the service would provide update once the rescue operation is concluded.
Motorists plying the Kaduna, Kano expressway have been urged to exercise caution, adhere to traffic directives, and avoid the accident scene until it is cleared.
