Man Utd stun Arsenal, slash EPL lead

Arsenal vs Manchester United

By John Ogunsemore

Manchester United produced a spectacular display to beat Arsenal 3-2 at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, narrowing the gap at the top of the English Premier League table to just four points.

The result, secured by a stunning late winner from Matheus Cunha, marked United’s second successive win against top opposition under manager Michael Carrick and handed Arsenal their first home defeat of the season while extending their recent winless run in the league.

Arsenal took the lead in the 29th minute through an own goal by United defender Lisandro Martinez.

However, the hosts’ advantage lasted only until the 37th minute when Bryan Mbeumo capitalised on a mistake by Arsenal’s Martin Zubimendi to equalise.

The game turned decisively after halftime. Patrick Dorgu restored United’s momentum with a spectacular long-range strike early in the second period to make it 2-1.

Arsenal responded with an 84th-minute equaliser through Mikel Merino, but Cunha delivered the decisive blow in the 87th minute with a curling, high-quality finish that silenced the home crowd and sparked wild celebrations among the travelling United supporters.

With Sunday’s loss, Arsenal’s lead at the summit has been reduced to four points, with Manchester City and Aston Villa, both victorious in their weekend fixtures, applying increased pressure.

United’s win propelled them into the top four.

Arsenal manager, Mikel Arteta, will now seek to address his team’s dip in form, having drawn their previous two league matches goalless against Liverpool and Nottingham Forest.

The Gunners remain favourites for the title but face a demanding run of fixtures ahead, starting with a Champions League clash against Kairat midweek, and an EPL clash away to Leeds on Saturday.
