Manchester United have sacked Ruben Amorim 14 months after the Portuguese assumed the mantle of manager at Old Trafford.

Amorim’s reign ended with a 1-1 draw against Leeds United on Sunday, leaving them sixth in the Premier League after 20 games.

Former midfielder and current Under-18s coach Darren Fletcher will take over on a temporary basis, with his first game away to Burnley on Wednesday night.

A permanent appointment is unlikely to be made before the summer.

Amorim was due to lead the Red Devils into Wednesday’s game against Burnley, but the decision has been made to remove the Portuguese from his position.

According to Sky Sports News, Amorim met with Manchester United sporting director Jason Wilcox and club CEO Omar Berrada on Monday morning, and he was informed of the decision from the powers-that-be.
