The Osun State Police Command, has arrested a 22-year old man, Odetayo Adebayo Samuel of Ila Orangun for broadcasting ‘false information’ on social media.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Ojelabi, in a statement on Friday, said the offence contravened the provision of Section 24 of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act 2015 and other relevant laws.

He said: “On June 1, 2026, the suspect published a video on Facebook via the account, Odetayo Oluwasegun, falsely claiming that bandits had invaded Osun State. The publication triggered widespread panic among residents.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the video was misleading; the video displays recorded members of the public restraining an individual experiencing a mental health crisis.

“Following investigation, the suspect was apprehended on June 3, 2026, for further investigation.

“Due to several pleas by the suspect’s aged parents, and a public apology tendered, he was warned and released not repeat such act,” Ojelabi said.

He quoted the Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, warning the public against distributing unverified information capable of inciting fear or disrupting public peace.
