A 34-year-old man, Obasi Ogbonna, has been remanded in prison custody by the Lagos State Magistrates’ Court, Ikorodu for allegedly defiling his wife’s 10-year-old niece.
Ogbonna was arraigned by the Lagos State Police Command on a two-count charge bordering on the alleged defilement of a minor and assault.
The first count reads: “That you, Obasi Ogbonna ‘M’, on July 27, 2026, at about 3:50 p.m., at No. 5 Alunson Street, Agric, Ikorodu, Lagos State, did commit a felony, to wit: defilement of one (name withheld), aged 10 years, by having unlawful carnal knowledge of her, thereby committing an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.”
The second count states: “That you, Obasi Ogbonna ‘M’, on the same date and at the aforementioned magisterial district, assaulted one Titilayo Obasi by beating her with slaps after you were caught having unlawful carnal knowledge of one (name withheld), thereby committing an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 170 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.”
The defendant’s plea was not taken because the magistrate lacked jurisdiction to entertain the matter.
Following the reading of the charges, the prosecutor, ASP A. Isaac, applied for the defendant to be remanded in prison custody pending legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
Magistrate S. K. Metero granted the application and ordered the prosecution to duplicate the case file and forward it to the Office of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions for legal advice.
The case was adjourned until August 24, 2026, for further proceedings.
It was gathered in court that the victim is the daughter of the defendant’s wife’s elder sister and had been living with the couple since September 2025 before the alleged incident occurred.
