Ebonyi State government has announced a plan to distribute two million insecticide mosquito treated nets across the state for malaria prevention and control.

Commissioner for Health, Dr. Moses Ekuma, announced this in Abakaliki, during this year’s World Malaria Day.

Addressing journalists, Ekuma represented by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dr. Lawrence Ezeogo, described malaria as endemic in sub-saharan  Africa.

He revealed that most of the health cases in the hospitals are malaria cases.

“Annually, about 610,000 cases  are reported and annually, we have about a million deaths all over the world.

“Infact, 60 percent of the cases we have in our hospitals , that report to the hospitals, are malaria cases. They come as a fever and that is why because of its endemicity, we need to be careful.

“Pregnant women have lost their lives, our children have lost their lives and it is a very preventable situation.

“This year, Ebonyi State government intends to share two million insecticidal treated nets, what we called a replacement campaign for the nets,” he stated.

He called for concerted efforts to eliminate malaria. The celebration gives us an opportunity to learn about the consequences of malaria as a problem.

Ekuma said the state government has repositioned the health sector and has trained medical personnel for malaria prevention.
