Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has declared that he will not become a political godfather or seek to control his successor after completing his eight-year tenure in 2027.
Makinde made the declaration at a Hijrah 1448 luncheon organised for members of the Muslim community at the Banquet Hall of the Government House, Agodi, Ibadan yesterday.
With political activities building up ahead of the 2027 elections, the governor said his priority after leaving office would be to ensure a smooth and peaceful transfer of power and allow his successor the freedom to govern according to his or her own vision.
He said governance should be about serving the people and not controlling those who succeed a government.
Makinde urged residents of the state to look beyond religion, ethnicity and other primordial considerations when choosing the next governor in 2027.
He advised voters to assess the competence, character, integrity and public service records of aspirants before deciding who to support.
The governor said political power should not be used to advance personal interests or establish a system of perpetual control, stressing that the success of any administration should be measured by its impact on the lives of the people.
Makinde said he would use the remaining period of his administration to consolidate existing achievements and complete additional projects and programmes capable of delivering socioeconomic benefits across the state.
He thanked the people of Oyo State for their support throughout his tenure and commended the Muslim community for its continued partnership with his administration.
The governor reiterated his commitment to inclusive governance, saying his administration would continue to pursue policies aimed at strengthening development, peace, stability and prosperity in the state until the end of his tenure.
