Moved by the establishment of the South East Development Commission (SEDC)by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu after he signed the bill into law,and the Supreme Court judgement that gave autonomy to local government in the country,

Labour Party stalwart in Abia State, Hon Iheanyichukwu Ugochukwu, popularly known as Prince Ugo, has set an agenda for the SEDC on how the new agency would deliver the desired dividend to the people of the South East.

In the same breath, Hon. Iheanyichukwu also called for accountability. at the local government level to enable the masses at the grass roots to enjoy the gains that come with the new development.

In a statement made available to the media, Hon Iheanyichukwu said that with the establishment of the South-East Development Commission, more funds would be available to tackle infrastructure decay in the region.

“Going by the reasons for which the commission was established, the goal is to help reconstruct damages to infrastructures during the civil war. On this note, management of the Commision should look out for critical areas like roads, bridges, and power plants .etc. It should not become a source of corruption and embezzlement of funds.”

On the local government autonomy, Hon. Iheanyichukwu said it is a welcome development, but caution the LG chairmen to make good use of the fund in the interest of the people by embarking on projects that would benefit the masses.

” When you look at Local Government today, aside from paying salaries, you can’t trace any viable projects to them. So we are expecting that with more funds acruing to them directly from federal allocation, they have no excuse but to deliver democratic dividend from the people.”

on the legislature, Hon Iheanyichukwu commended the rapport between the law and the executive. “This development has led to quick passage of Bills at the national level. At the state level, the lawmakers are more or less appendage of the executive as they mostly sign every bill sent to them.

“In the nearest future, if I have the opportunity to serve my people as lawmaker, I shall do my best to ensure the independence of the legislature from other arms of government. This measure will ensure that our people at the grassroots get the best of governance.”, he said.
