Senator Nenadi Usman has stated that the leadership of the Labour Party (LP) under Julius Abure is no longer recognised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Usman made this known yesterday during INEC’s quarterly consultative meeting with leaders of political parties in Abuja.

Her presence at the high-level meeting followed the judgment of the Federal High Court delivered on January 21, 2026, as well as INEC’s formal recognition of her leadership of LP.

“In compliance with the judgment of the Federal High Court delivered on January 21, 2026, and following the recognition of my leadership of the LP by INEC, I am currently attending INEC’s quarterly consultative meeting with leaders of political parties,” she said.

She described INEC’s action as a clear indication that the commission no longer recognises the Barrister Julius Abure-led leadership of the party.

Usman commended INEC for what she described as its commitment to upholding the rule of law, truth and justice, adding that the development marked a significant step towards restoring internal democracy and legitimacy within LP.

Since the last judgment, Abure-led leadership of the party has threatened to appeal the judgement, insisting that he remains the authentic chairman of the party.
