Atlético de Madrid suffered a shock 1-0 defeat at home to Real Betis on Sunday night, ending their 13-game unbeaten run at the Metropolitano Stadium.
Nigeria winger Ademola Lookman made his long-awaited La Liga debut for the Rojiblancos after joining Atlético from Atalanta on deadline day. Lookman came into the game on the back of a dazzling midweek Copa del Rey display, where he scored and assisted in Atlético’s 5-0 rout of Betis.
Despite his energetic 74-minute outing, the Super Eagles star could not help his side break down a disciplined Betis defence. Antony’s 28th-minute strike proved decisive, capitalising on a rare lapse in Atlético’s usually organised backline. Lookman’s well-timed header just before halftime was ruled out for a tight offside, leaving fans frustrated but impressed with his movement and attacking intent.

Atlético’s struggles were compounded by injuries and absences to key players. Midfielder Pablo Barrios was sidelined with a leg injury, Alexander Sørloth featured only in the second half, and 34-year-old Antoine Griezmann carried most of the attacking responsibility. In defence, the partnership of Josema Giménez and Robin Le Normand lacked cohesion, allowing Betis to exploit space on the counter.
Despite the loss, Lookman remained positive. Posting on X after the match, he said:
“Not the result we wanted but we stay positive. Very special moment making my debut in the Metropolitano. Aupa Atleti.”
The defeat leaves Diego Simeone’s side in third place in La Liga, trailing the top two. Atlético will aim to respond next weekend when they visit struggling Rayo Vallecano, currently 18th in the table. Atlético will also need to prepare for a tough Copa del Rey clash against Barcelona later this week, as they fight to salvage silverware this season.
