In-form Ademola Lookman has shifted his full attention to this weekend’s crucial La Liga showdown between Atlético Madrid and league leaders FC Barcelona at the Vicente Calderón.

The red-hot winger, who inspired Nigeria to a 2-2 draw with Jordan earlier in the week, made this known during a Zoom media session organized by La Liga.

Lookman has been in impressive form, having scored against Barcelona in the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey before finding the net again in his side’s recent league clash with Real Madrid. Buoyed by these performances, he expressed confidence in his fitness ahead of the high-stakes encounter.  “Every game is difficult, and everyone knows La Liga is a tough competition,” Lookman said. “It’s going to be a special match against a top opponent. Barcelona are leading the table, and we understand what it means to face them. We knocked them out of the Copa del Rey, and now we meet again before facing off in the Champions League.” The Nigerian international added that his focus remains firmly on the immediate task. “Tomorrow’s game is on my mind. We’re taking it one step at a time, and I’m happy to be in the right shape to give my best if called upon.”

With key players like Marcos Llorente and Johnny Cardoso suspended, Lookman could play an even more pivotal role. Several others, including Jan Oblak and Alexander Sørloth, are also doubtful.

Barcelona, meanwhile, will be without Raphinha, who is sidelined with a hamstring injury. Andreas Christensen remains a long-term absentee, while Frenkie de Jong is still recovering but could return for the upcoming UEFA Champions League tie.

There is, however, positive news for the Catalan side, as Eric García is fit to start, while Jules Koundé and Alejandro Balde have resumed training.

Marcus Rashford could feature in attack, with João Cancelo and Marc Bernal also expected to be involved.

Atlético Madrid currently sit fourth in the La Liga standings, while Barcelona lead the table, holding a four-point advantage over second-placed Real Madrid in the title race.
