Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman has admitted that he has endured a difficult start to the season after ending his goal drought in Atlético Madrid’s 2-0 victory over Manchester United in the UEFA Champions League.
The Nigerian international came off the bench to score Atlético’s second goal at the Metropolitano on Tuesday, helping Diego Simeone’s side secure their first victory in the competition this season.
Lookman’s goal arrived in the 79th minute after Manchester United goalkeeper Senne Lammens parried Jonathan David’s effort into his path, allowing the forward to finish into an unguarded net.
The strike ended a six-match run without a goal and provided a timely boost for the former Leipzig forward, who has struggled to reproduce his best form at the beginning of the campaign.
Reflecting on his performance and the team’s victory, Lookman praised Atlético’s collective effort, highlighting their work in both areas of the pitch.
“A big performance from the team, all round defensively and offensively. A big, big performance from us,” he told the club’s media.
The former Atalanta star also acknowledged his personal difficulties this season, stressing the importance of maintaining his determination and continuing to work hard despite his struggles.
“Very happy, but I have not really had the best start to the season myself, personally. But keep on going, keep on fighting, keep on working. That is the mindset.”
Lookman’s struggles were also evident during Nigeria’s recent international fixtures, as he failed to find the net in the Super Eagles’ matches against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau during the September FIFA window.
His goal against Manchester United could provide the confidence boost he needs to regain his scoring form and make a stronger impact for Atletico Madrid and Nigeria.
