Ademola Lookman will line up against a club that wanted him before now. Bayern Munich had a deal in place for the Nigerian last summer before finances blocked it, and now they visit Atlético Madrid in the Champions League. Lookman’s task is to prove himself.
Bayern arrive at the Estadio Metropolitano for Matchday 4. They sit 14th in the league phase and are still hurting from a 2-2 Klassiker draw with Borussia Dortmund. Joshua Kimmich said: “Today’s game didn’t need to end like that. Especially when you see the game in the second half, I don’t think a draw is justified. At the end of the day, we need to take the point, even though we obviously should’ve won.”
Bayern rarely let setbacks linger, and opponents of Atlético’s calibre tend to bring out their sharpest football.
This is Kane’s first Champions League game since winning the Ballon d’Or. He has scored in each of his last 10 appearances in the competition. A goal would tie Ronaldo’s record of 11 straight.
Lookman moved to Atlético from Atalanta and has made an impact. He scored against Club Brugge in the knockout play-offs and against Barcelona in the quarter-finals. At the time of that report he was third on Nigeria’s all-time Champions League scoring list, behind Obafemi Martins and Victor Osimhen.
Atlético are known for defensive strength, but Bayern have scored in their last 24 Champions League games. None of their last 66 away group or league-phase matches ended goalless. They have won four of the eight meetings with Atlético and are unbeaten in the last three (W2, D1). Atlético have not kept a clean sheet in 12 matches against German opposition, most recently drawing 1-1 at Stuttgart.
Kimmich is back after missing three games on compassionate grounds. Without him, Bayern drew 2-2 at home to Arsenal. Another appearance would level him with Philipp Lahm on 112 Champions League games, fifth on the all-time list for a German.
