Chairman of Chisco Transport Company, Chief Chidi Anyiagbu, has donated two new luxury buses to the Lagos Correctional Centre to facilitate the transportation of inmates to and from courts and enhance the speedy dispensation of justice.
Anyiagbu, who made the donation as part of activities marking his 70th birthday, said he was moved to support the correctional service after observing that inadequate vehicles for conveying inmates to court was hampering the administration of justice.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony held at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre, Lagos, the businessman said the gesture was his way of giving back to society and supporting the government in addressing critical logistical challenges confronting the correctional system.
“I observed that logistics in conveying inmates to courts have been a challenge, thereby affecting the dispensation of justice on time. Hence, the need to assist the government in acquiring buses for the correctional centres,” he said.
He called on well-meaning Nigerians and corporate organisations to support government efforts to bridge logistical gaps and improve the effectiveness of institutions responsible for administering justice.
Receiving the buses, the Assistant Controller-General of Corrections in charge of Zone A, Raph Onazi, commended Anyiagbu for the gesture.
Onazi pledged that the vehicles would be put to effective use, particularly in enhancing the movement of staff and inmates to and from courts for the speedy dispensation of justice.
The Deputy Controller of Corrections in charge of Ikoyi Correctional Centre, DCC Ogueri, who is the custodian of the buses, also thanked Anyiagbu for the donation.
Ogueri recalled that in 2025, Anyiagbu’s son, Mr Obinna, had donated some items to the centre and subsequently introduced his father to the correctional facility.
He said the most important responsibility was ensuring that inmates were taken to court whenever required, adding that the new buses would go a long way in facilitating access to justice for the inmates.
According to him, the vehicles would significantly assist the centre in administering justice to more than 70 per cent of inmates whose cases require regular court appearances.
Meanwhile, the Ikoyi Correctional Centre conferred patronship on Chief Anyiagbu in appreciation of his support.
In addition to the two buses, five bags of rice were also donated to the centre as part of the birthday celebration.
