At Liverpool, Joe Gomez finds himself at a crossroads. The defender’s conspicuous omission from the matchday squad against Ipswich has stoked questions about Arne Slot’s plans for him going forward.

Gomez’s versatility proved valuable for Jurgen Klopp last season, but a delayed return from international duty seems to have hindered his progress under the new manager. Whispers regarding a potential move away from Anfield have only intensified this summer.

Limited game time during pre-season, including a mere 16-minute appearance against Sevilla, raised eyebrows. His omission from the squad for the season opener against Ipswich has further fueled speculation.

The 27-year-old defender is currently exploring his “options before the transfer window closes,” according to Paul Joyce of The Times. Several clubs, including Fulham, Chelsea, Newcastle, and Aston Villa, are apparently interested in signing him.

Gomez and Liverpool have had talks, but Joyce makes it clear that “there is no guarantee” he will go before the transfer window closes. Liverpool are “not forcing” him out, Joyce said.

However, considering the current centre-back and full-back pecking orders, Gomez will have to contend with intense competition for a starting position. Given this fact, it is understandable that the English defender is considering his options.

Liverpool, though, will be wary of losing a player of Gomez’s experience and skill, particularly without a replacement lined up. The club is aware of the potential risk associated with squad depth, especially given the ever-present threat of injuries.

Gomez’s situation remains fluid, promising to be a key storyline for Liverpool fans to monitor as the transfer deadline approaches.
