Liverpool opens Premier League campaign with gritty win over Ipswich

By Ezekiel David

Liverpool beat newly promoted Ipswich Town 2-0 at Portman Road to kick off their Premier League campaign under new manager Arne Slot’s direction.

Ipswich, who played in their first top-flight match in more than 20 years, put on a strong first-half display, but Liverpool broke the deadlock shortly after the hour. After a deft passing move involving Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah, Diogo Jota skillfully headed the Egyptian’s cross past Christian Walton, the goalkeeper for Ipswich.

The visitors doubled their lead just five minutes later. Dominik Szoboszlai threaded a precise pass to Salah, who calmly slotted home his ninth opening-day Premier League goal, extending his own record in the process.

While Ipswich posed threats in the first half, notably through Jacob Greaves and Omar Hutchinson, Liverpool asserted control after the break. Jota missed a golden opportunity to open the scoring early in the second half, but ultimately atoned for his miss before Salah sealed the victory for the Reds.
