Lions District Governor (DG), Lions International, District 404-B2, Nigeria, Tolulope Senbanjo, has initiated a fundraising campaign aimed at eradicating hunger within Lagos indigent communities.
He explained: “Lions are ordinary people who do extraordinary things to help support good causes. Community service projects are a priority to Lions. We are united through working within the same global causes. The global causes are Diabetes, Vision, Hunger Relief, Youth Empowerment, Disaster Relief, Paediatric Cancer and Humanitarian Effort.
“This year, we would intensify our plan around these areas but our core project is the building and equipping of a N250 million food bank in Ikeja.”
Senbanjo appealed to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to partner with the club by donating land for the building to be erected: “We have written to corporate organisations and individuals to voice their support for the wellness of Nigerians.”
Remarkably, there has been a show of solidarity from corporate organisations, as evident during the fundraising and public presentation ceremony in Lekki, Lagos, where Senbanjo was inaugurated as the youngest DG of Lions in Africa.
He said the food bank would be accessible to the underprivileged, to bring relief and succour to indigent citizens: “There are other humanitarian deeds we intend to engage in within the 2024/2025 Lions year.
“The support from high-profile figures and government officials highlights a shared dedication to addressing social inequalities and advancing community development. Community involvement is crucial for the success of this initiative, with various events planned.
“The increase in food prices has pushed some food items out of the reach of poor and average Nigerians, with most people rationing food and cutting down on essentials.
“Funds raised during the campaign will be directed towards the N250m food bank project to be built in Ikeja, while we penetrate the hinterland with meal programmes, and food distribution methods, as well as initiatives that would promote sustainable practices.
“By raising awareness and encouraging active participation, the Lions District aims not only to tackle immediate hunger issues but also to foster a spirit of generosity and community support, ultimately working towards a future where no one goes hungry.
“The campaign underscores the importance of local action in addressing global challenges and highlights the power of collective efforts in creating lasting change.”
Lions Clubs International president, Fabricio Oliveira, represented by the international director for Africa Constitutional Area 8, Princess Tope Tychus, underscored the importance of teamwork and service.
Mr. Anogwi Anyanwu, the multiple council chairperson for District 404 Nigeria, urged Senbanjo to lead efforts to grow the membership to 1.5 million by June 2027.
He stressed that growth was essential for meeting increasing humanitarian needs globally.
Outgoing District Governor, Prof. Emmanuel Fagbohun, advised members to continue the strong support he received during his tenure.
