Cross River State Governor, Senator Bassey Otu, has called on Nigerians to remain committed to peace and unity in building a nation future generations will be proud to inherit.
Otu made the call in a message delivered by the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Elvert Ayambem, at an interdenominational thanksgiving service to mark Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary held at Christian Central Chapel in Calabar.
He said independence is beyond a date in history, but a reminder of the sacrifices of past heroes and the responsibility on the present generation.
“Nigeria has travelled a long road since 1960. Yet, through it all, the Nigerian spirit has endured. Our people remain resilient, enterprising and deeply committed to the hope of a better country,” Otu said.
The Governor reaffirmed his People First agenda, noting that his administration will continue to work for a state where people live in peace, work with dignity and look to the future with confidence.
He called for collective effort from the Church, traditional institutions, private sector, civil society and youths to advance the state and nation, and urged prayers for wisdom for leaders, peace in communities and protection for security personnel.
In his sermon themed “Using Your Past Testimony to Get Your Future Miracle,” the General Overseer of Christian Central Chapel International, Archbishop Emmah Isong, said Nigeria’s problem is not demonic attack but ingratitude to God for past blessings.
“No demon is troubling Nigeria, Cross River State, our families and even our lives, but we lack gratitude to God over our past blessings,” Isong said.
He said Nigeria has forgotten to thank God for its oil blessings, mineral wealth and the days when the country had so much it did not know how to spend.
Isong said past testimonies are foundations for future miracles and warned leaders against utterances capable of pitching states against each other, noting that political offices are transient.
He also warned against unbridled criticism and demonization of leaders, describing it as unbiblical, and urged that criticism should come with constructive suggestions.
