By Jeff Iwu
The Arts Theatre of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, is set to host the much-anticipated staging of Babel and Boys, a play written by Leonard Ifeanyi Ugwu Jr., on October 25 and 26, 2024. This event is a collaborative effort by Bigmanchopper Entertainment, Words and Art Nigeria, and the Institute of African Studies, University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
Babel and Boys, published in 2022 by Phoenix Award Books Publications (PABPUB), is more than just a stage play —cit’s a reflection of modern African society, packed with the universal themes of love, betrayal, revenge, and self-discovery. The story follows Tunde and Babel, two best friends whose bond is shattered when Tunde assassinates Babel’s father right in front of him, only to disappear without a trace. Years later, Tunde reappears in Lagos, caught in a whirlwind of love and introspection. But why did he commit such a heinous act? And how long will it take for karma to catch up with him? This play, rich with modern motifs, is a gripping exploration of human emotions and societal dynamics, making it a must-watch for everyone.
Directed by Kosisochukwu Ejikeme (Bigmanchopper) and assisted by Victor Emenike (Fadeless), the production features a talented cast, including Paul Chisom (Nairda De Hype), Arinze Bright, Chidozie (Samsung), and Chiamaka Opara, among others.
The poet and playwright, Leonard Ifeanyi Ugwu Jr. is a lecturer and researcher at the Institute of African Studies, University of Nigeria, Nsukka. A literary enthusiast, Ugwu’s works have been featured in prestigious journals, anthologies, and websites, including Brittle Paper, Oddball Magazine, Spillwords Press, ANA Review, Atunis Poetry, Fever of the Mind Poetry, Muse Journal, and many others. He is also the author of two poetry collections: Echoes of the Invisible (Author House, USA, 2017) and Echoes of Bullets (Emotion Press, Nigeria, 2021), which was nominated for the Akachi Ezeigbo Prize for Literature 2024.
