Senator Ahmad Lawan’s office has firmly denied any role in the reported arrest of Ishe’u Ibrahim Jadda, a constituent allegedly detained by the Department of State Services (DSS) for criticising the Gashua Water Supply Project.
A press statement issued by Dr Ezrel Tabiowo, Media Adviser to the Yobe North Senator, described a Sahara Reporters article as “false, reckless, and a deliberate attempt to tarnish the image of a respected public servant.”
The Sahara Reporters story, published on May 10, 2025, claimed Jadda was arrested by the DSS after calling the N5.73 billion water project, facilitated by Lawan, a “white elephant” that was commissioned without supplying water. “Jadda had commented that the N5.73bn Water Supply Scheme was commissioned but without any water supply, describing it as a white elephant,” the report stated.
Lawan’s office rejected these allegations, affirming his commitment to democratic principles. “For the avoidance of doubt, Senator Ahmad Lawan…has never, and will never use his office or influence to suppress dissent or intimidate critics,” the statement read. It highlighted Lawan’s record as former Senate President (2019–2023) in promoting transparency and open dialogue.
The Gashua Water Supply Project, at the heart of the controversy, was facilitated by Lawan to address a health crisis in Yobe North, where kidney disease has been linked to unsafe drinking water. “Rather than being threatened by criticism, Senator Lawan welcomes constructive feedback… The allegations of his involvement in any form of repression are, therefore, not only false but a calculated attempt to distract from the tangible progress being made in Yobe North,” the statement added.
The senator’s office challenged Sahara Reporters to provide evidence linking Lawan to Jadda’s arrest and urged the media to avoid unverified claims.
“Senator Ahmad Lawan remains focused on his mandate of delivering impactful representation and will not be deterred by baseless distractions,” the statement concluded.
The DSS has not commented on the arrest as of press time.
