Registrar of Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo, Mr. Emmanuel Fanu has dumped his membership of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian University (SSANU) and pitched tent with another union on campus.
Fanu, who before his move was the number one senior staff on campus joined the Non Academic Staff Union (NASU) and has been paying his dues to the union.
Daily Sun gathered that SSANU’s opposition to his second term bid as Registrar allegedly infuriated Fanu.
Fanu was appointed Registrar of LASU in July 2022 after acting for four years and he serves as Secretary to the Governing Council.
In swift reactions, Fanu and NASU branch chairman, Sanni Obafemi, insisted there is freedom of association, which is enshrined in the Constitution and both also denied the insinuations that NASU is solely for junior staff.
Daily Sun learnt that when SSANU kicked against his reapplying for the position, Fanu, in December 2025 joined NASU and directed the bursary to stop remitting his check off dues to SSANU.
According to sources, the registrar has been paying his dues to NASU since December 2025 till date.
The sources explained that in the public universities, the registrar is seen as the number one SSANU member.
They revealed that the vice chancellor gave NASU N10million to host a national conference and the union in appreciation presented awards to the university management.
In his reaction, Fanu maintained that there is freedom of association in Nigeria, which is one of the fundamental human rights of an individual.

He picked holes in the claim that the union is for junior workers in the university system, adding, “NASU, for the purpose of education is not a “junior union” as stated by you.”
His words: “The Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) is a major Nigerian trade union representing non-teaching workers in universities and associated institutions.
“One of the objectives of NASU and in fact, any other staff union is to protect the welfare of members—such as administrative, security, and maintenance workers—and ensure fair treatment and compensation at the work place.”
NASU LASU chairman, Mr. Obafemi confirmed that Fanu is now a member of the union and has been paying his check off dues.
Obafemi said the registrar exercised his fundamental human rights under freedom of association enshrined in the Constitution and joined the union of his choice and wondered about the noise of Fanu being a member of NASU.
The chairman revealed that the union is in support of his quest to seek reappointment for another four years term.
He accused some SSANU members of orchestrating the campaign of calumny against the registrar and vowed that the union will continue to protect the interest of members.
Obafemi further disclosed that aside Fanu, there are other management staff who are NASU members including one academic staff as well as others who are currently registrars in two universities.
He defended the release of N10million by LASU management to host the recent NASU National Delegates Conference, noting that the national body wrote to the vice chancellor and sought financial assistance to enable the branch to host the event.
The chairman also defended the awards NASU presented to the VC and other staff management, which he said was to appreciate the VC welfare gestures to members.
