LASU reaffirms ban on sale, consumption of alcohol, illicit drugs

The Lagos State University (LASU) Senate, at its 292nd Statutory Meeting, held recently, reaffirmed the prohibition of the sale and consumption of alcohol and illicit drugs.

The Senate ban would be enforced at the main campus, Ojo, and the Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM), Ikeja, Epe, and Badagry campuses.

The Senate, during deliberations, observed that the sale of alcoholic beverages and illicit drugs in the guise of alcoholic beverages to students by food vendors and bars outside the perimeter fence around the PPL pedestrian exit at the main campus, Ojo, had also become prevalent.

The Senate noted: “Sale of alcohol and illicit drugs on campuses by food vendors has always been prohibited in the university.

“Alcoholic beverages sales to members of staff should be restricted to the Senior Staff Club at the main campus, Ojo.

“The standard of hygiene in some food canteens and their environment on campuses is very poor and could lead to an epidemic outbreak.”

The highest academic organ of LASU tasked the Environmental Unit of the University Health Centre to conduct regular and periodic environmental hygiene inspections on food canteens and their environs on campuses.

The body also urged the security unit to improve surveillance in and around various locations of canteens on campus to enforce the prohibition of alcoholic beverages and illicit drug consumption by students.
