The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has warned motorists against excessive speeding following a fatal lone vehicular crash that claimed the life of a female driver at Mongoro, inward Ile-Zik, along one of Lagos’ major traffic corridors over the weekend.
According to the agency, preliminary investigations showed that the deceased, who was driving a Toyota Sienna with registration number LND 162 HB, lost control of the vehicle before it veered off the road and crashed into a roadside building. The impact of the collision resulted in her death at the scene. She was the only occupant of the vehicle.
LASTMA said its officers, who were on routine patrol in the area, responded immediately after receiving reports of the incident. The officers secured the crash site by placing safety cones around the affected section of the road and commenced traffic management to minimise disruption to traffic flow and reduce the risk of secondary accidents during the evacuation process.
The agency said the accident caused temporary traffic disruption, but the intervention of its officers helped restore normal vehicular movement shortly after emergency operations were concluded.
Security personnel from the Afonka Police Post, under the Shasha Divisional Police Headquarters, also provided security at the scene and remained there until the evacuation exercise was completed.
Commenting on the incident, the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, described the crash as a reminder of the consequences associated with excessive speed and unsafe driving practices, urging motorists to comply with traffic regulations.

According to him, speed limits are not merely legal requirements but safety measures intended to reduce road crashes and protect lives.
“Every journey must be undertaken with prudence, patience and an unwavering commitment to established traffic regulations. No destination is worth the ultimate sacrifice of human life. Excessive speed remains one of the foremost causes of fatal road traffic crashes and motorists must, at all times, exercise the highest degree of caution, restraint and responsibility while behind the wheel,” the General Manager stated.
Bakare-Oki also advised motorists to ensure that their vehicles are mechanically fit before setting out on any trip, noting that any sign of mechanical failure should prompt drivers to stop using the vehicle until the necessary repairs have been carried out.
He said routine vehicle maintenance remains an important component of road safety and could help prevent avoidable accidents resulting from mechanical defects.
The agency also extended its condolences to the family of the deceased.
The latest incident adds to concerns over road safety in Lagos, where traffic authorities have continued to urge motorists to obey speed limits, avoid reckless driving and ensure that their vehicles remain roadworthy as part of broader efforts to reduce road traffic crashes across the state.
