The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has honoured a Senior Traffic Officer, Mr Olatunfe Oluwole John, with the prestigious LASTMA Man of the Year 2025 Award in recognition of his exceptional humanity, gallantry and dedication to duty.
The award was presented during a ceremony attended by the management and staff of the agency, where the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, described Officer Olatunfe as a shining example of professionalism and compassion within the service.
Bakare-Oki said the honour followed the officer’s outstanding conduct while on duty along the BRT corridor at PWD on the Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway, where he acted decisively as a first responder to a road traffic accident involving a commercial scooter rider and a female pedestrian.
According to the General Manager, the victim reportedly went into severe convulsions after the collision, but Officer Olatunfe promptly intervened, administered first aid and ensured that both the injured woman and the scooter rider were taken to Mayfair Hospital, Agege, for urgent medical attention.
“He demonstrated uncommon courage, empathy and professionalism. His prompt response and humane disposition attracted public admiration and widespread commendation on social media,” Bakare-Oki said.
The General Manager further disclosed that Officer Olatunfe remained with the victim at the hospital, offered prayers for her recovery and took the initiative to contact her family members using her mobile phone, ensuring her father and siblings arrived before he returned to his duty post.
In addition, the officer ensured accountability by compelling the scooter rider involved in the accident to take full responsibility for the incident, including the payment of the victim’s medical bills.

In recognition of his exemplary conduct, LASTMA issued a formal letter of commendation, promoted him from Choke Point Officer to 2nd Bravo, Zone 20, and presented him with a cash reward.
Bakare-Oki said the recognition was aimed at reinforcing the agency’s core values and encouraging other officers to uphold high standards of integrity, compassion and service delivery.
“This award sends a clear message that excellence and dedication will always be recognised.
Officer Olatunfe truly represents the ideals of LASTMA in safeguarding lives and ensuring orderly road usage,” he said.
The Man of the Year 2025 award, the General Manager added, reflected LASTMA’s commitment to professionalism, human dignity and exemplary service within Lagos State’s traffic management system.
