From Fred Itua, Abuja
Leaders of Amechi-Uwani and Obeagu communities Enugu South Local Government Area of Enugu State have called on the Inspector-General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, to prevail on a Superintendent of Police, Chidiebere Ijiomah, leader of Octopus Squad.
In a letter addressed to the IGP by the community by their legal representative, Kennedy Praise, the leaders said the false allegations and accusations against some respected indigenes, and for which two of such have been in detention since Tuesday, July 4 till date, should be looked into.
They said some other indigenes of our clients were being hounded by the said Ijiomah and his squad.
“Our client has found it extremely expedient and necessary to approach your office to, among other things, ask for your intervention in this circumstance. Chidiebere Ijiomah of the Octopus Squad of Enugu State Police Command has been indiscriminately arresting and detaining the indigenes of our client, whom they perceive as the obstacle to their clandestine plans to divest our clients of their ancestral heritage being the said ancestral land.
“It is in furtherance of the above purpose that the indigenes of our client, to wit; Ozor Onukwube Ogbodo and Mr. Okwudili Agah, were arrested and detained at the instance of SP Chidiebere Ijiomah, who has been manufacturing all manner of unfounded allegations.
including but not limited to terrorism, kidnapping, cultism, rape, membership of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), as well as the Eastern Security Network (ESN) activities against them, just so that they will continue to remain in police detention.
“We find it also important to state that the unlawful activities of these conspirators, spearheaded by SP Chidiebere Ijiomah, are not only limited to Amechi Uwani as same extends and heavily, too, to Obeagu Awkunanaw, which community saw two of her indigenes to wit; Mr. Friday Ani and Mr. Chinonso Sunday Agbo arrested by the SP Chidiebere Ijiomah”s Octopus squad and taken to the detention facility of the said Octopus Squad to be charged to court without any investigation whatsoever. This action was stalled by the public outcry in various media outlets,” the lawyer wrote in the petition.
“It is in regard to the above and taking into consideration the unprofessionalism being exhibited by SP. Chidiebere Ijiomah that our perturbed clients have deemed it very apposite to approach your respected office to humbly request that you take over all the investigation case files affecting the above-mentioned people who are currently incarcerated at the detention facility at MTD Awkunanaw Division of the Enugu State Command of the Nigeria Police Force,” he pleaded.
When contacted for comments, Ijiomah told Daily Sun to contact the state command of police in Enugu State, as he is not authorised to speak on the issues.
