As a way of surviving the hard times, some women in Lagos came together to launch farmers and multi purpose cooperative known as Eagles` Wings Farmers and Multi purpose cooperative.
Speaking on the occasion, the president of the group, Princess Sinatra Olu, said that with the current state of the economy, all hands should be on the deck for the family survival.
According to her, the time is gone when women stay in the house to wait for their husbands to work and bring money for the family to eat.
She said that the purpose of forming the cooperative is to empower the women so that they too would become bread winners. The chairperson of the cooperative board of trustee, Chief Mrs. Kate Onyechere, said that forming cooperatives has become one of the ways women contribute positively to the economy of their homes in particular and the nation in general.
Mrs Onyechere , who is a Senior Adviser to the governor of Abia State, Okezie Ikpeazu, said that with the grants which they hope to be getting from the Bank of Industry, Cooperative Bank and other donor agencies, they would become big time farmers as well as employers of labour.
She appealed to governments at all levels to start taking special interest in women cooperatives, adding that if the women are well empowered, it will rub off positively both in the homes and in the society at large.
“We all know that women utilise funds better than men. One of the major cause of the militancy and insurgencies in the country is hunger. A hungry man is an angry man. Women are in charge of the kitchens. If more money is put in the hands of women through cooperatives, I can assure you that the insecurity in the country would reduce drastically. So, I want to use this medium to call on government and its agencies and departments to start encouraging and empowering women cooperatives,” Mrs. Onyechere said.
