The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) has announced an 18 percent fare increase as part of its Bus Reform Initiative (BRI) scheme.
In a statement released on Thursday, LAMATA explained that the adjustment was necessary to address rising operational costs and to maintain the vehicles for commuters across Lagos.
The new fare structure will take effect on February 17, 2025.
“The fare adjustment reflects the increased cost of operations and is essential to ensure the continued operation of buses, enabling seamless mobility for residents across Lagos. We seek your understanding and cooperation during this period,” the statement read.
LAMATA had on June 30, 2022, announced a N100 fare increase for all routes under the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, following approval by the Lagos State Government. At the time, the decision was attributed to the rising cost of diesel and the challenges of maintaining buses due to a shortage of spare parts.
The agency said the latest fare hike underscores the ongoing financial pressures faced by public transport in the state as it strives to balance its operations with the need to provide affordable services to residents.
