Lagos Taskforce warns against encroachment on walkways

The Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Enforcement Unit (Task Force) has warned transport union officials against illegally allocating pedestrian walkways and public spaces to petty traders, describing the practice as a threat to public safety and urban order.

 The Chairman of the agency, CSP Adetayo Akerele, issued the warning during a stakeholders’ engagement for the Ikeja Division at the Lagos State Safety Arena, Oshodi.

 Akerele stated that the meeting was part of the Task Force’s ongoing efforts to strengthen collaboration with transport unions, market leaders, trade associations, and other stakeholders in promoting public safety, environmental compliance, and adherence to state laws.

 The engagement, themed “Promoting Public Safety and Environmental Best Practices in Lagos State,” followed similar sessions held in the Ikorodu, Epe, Badagry, and Lagos Central divisions.

 Akerele commended Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration for its investments in environmental sustainability, urban renewal, public infrastructure, and enforcement initiatives, reaffirming the Task Force’s commitment to supporting the state’s THEMES Plus Agenda.

 Regarding the scrap metal industry, Akerele directed the Lagos State Chairman of Scrap Dealers and Employers Operators, Comrade Adewale Adedotun, to ensure all members are properly registered and possess verifiable identification. He noted that this measure will improve accountability, enhance security, and help law enforcement agencies distinguish legitimate operators from criminal elements.
