The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in Lagos, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, has appealed for calm over the matter of a 17-year-old girl allegedly defiled by a police officer attached to Ogudu Police Station.
Hundeyin made the appeal in an X post following a public outcry generated by the case.
Daily Sun had reported that the Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), simply identified as Owolabi, was alleged to have had carnal knowledge of the girl in his office at the Ojota Police Station.
He was reportedly arrested followed a referral letter dated July 1, 2024, and addressed to the Commissioner of Police, Adegoke Fayoade, by the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency.
Based on the referral letter, the commissioner of police ordered for immediate investigation into the matter.
Hundeyin shared the statement confirming the suspect’s arrest on his X page on Sunday.
Reacting, an X user had asked the police spokesman to share the suspect’s photo.
However, Hundeyin said, “A medical examination has been conducted on the 17-year-old girl. The result is still being awaited.
“If the results cannot prove anything, it will be difficult to secure a conviction in court. The same procedure would be followed if you were the accused.
“However, if the result proves the allegation true, then he is culpable and we would be the first to mention his name.
“Again, let us approach issues with facts and not emotions, lest we jeopardise our case with our own hands.”
