Traffic was disrupted along the Gbagada Expressway in Lagos on Thursday after two separate accidents involving trucks, trailers and other vehicles caused a heavy build-up of motorists.
The crashes occurred at different points along the busy expressway, with one involving two major trucks and another near Charlie Boy involving two trailers and five other vehicles.
The accidents prompted the deployment of officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), alongside tow trucks and a forklift, to clear the wreckage and restore normal traffic flow.
At the first crash scene, one of the trucks had been removed from the road by the time of filing this report, while efforts were ongoing to evacuate the second vehicle.
Speaking at the scene, LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, said the agency had been working since 5 am to clear the affected sections of the expressway.
“As you can see, the major one here, all efforts is on ground to remove it. The first one has been removed about 45 minutes ago,” he said.
Bakare-Oki said LASTMA had deployed a forklift and two heavy-duty tow trucks, while arrangements were being made to bring in a crane to complete the recovery operation.
“We have every equipment, a forklift, another two major tow trucks here. But we are trying to arrange another crane now. The arrangement is solid. We will put all hands on deck and ensure the vehicle is removed,” he said.
On the second crash near Charlie Boy, the LASTMA boss said the five vehicles involved had already been evacuated, while a tow truck was working to remove the two trailers still obstructing the road.
“There is another accident at the back by Charlie Boy involving two trailers and five vehicles. All five vehicles have been evacuated. A tow truck is at that spot too, about to remove the two trailers that are involved in the secondary accident,” he said.
Motorists were consequently left to navigate slow-moving traffic as LASTMA personnel continued recovery operations at the two accident locations.
