The Cluster Director of Human Resource of Lagos Continental Hotel and Abuja Continental Hotel, Mr. Niyi Agoro has harped on the need for top hospitality outfits to prioritise staff’s welfare as a way of motivating them for optimal performance.

He was speaking during a recent interview with some jounalists.

Agoro said the role of human resource was critical and fundamental in the hospitality industry. He said: “We give service and the type of service we give must be at its best and because of this, you need human beings to give this service. That is why the human element is so central to everything that we do. This is why we take the management of our people very seriously.  We go the extra mile to ensure that they are happy, and when they are happy our guests are happy, when they are not happy, our guests are not happy. And for us to continue to remain in business, our guests must be happy. We must give our guests a memorable experience. So, our approach both to junior and senior employees is to make them happy so that they can make our guests happy. This is how we have continued to remain in business.”

Agoro said the Continental group has a staff welfare structure that is unmatched in the Nigerian hospitality industry.

Speaking further on how the hotel motivates its workers he gave the example of the COVID 19 period when the hotel made sure the staff were paid their full salary despite the hotel being closed for seven months. All these, he said, were done to motivate the staff  to give their best.
