The annual Lagos Boat Regatta has been described by the Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu as a celebration of the rich culture and aquatic heritage of the people of the state. Sanwo-Olu said this in his speech to kick off the 2024 edition of the regatta. He said: “This extraordinary event is not only a celebration of Lagos’ rich cultural heritage but also a vibrant showcase of our city’s unique connection to water—an essential element of our identity and livelihood. Lagos, the Centre of Excellence, is a city defined by its dynamic waterways. Through this festival, we illuminate the aquatic splendour that makes Lagos a premier destination for tourists and stakeholders from across the globe. “
Sanwo-Olu said the regatta reflects the resolve of the state to promote and embrace the tradition of the people. He spoke further: “The regatta’s traditional tour and ceremonial rites remind us of the deep historical significance of water to our people. The grand procession, led by the governor’s fleet, is a symbol of unity, leadership, and the pride we hold in showcasing Lagos to the world. The heart of this festival, however, lies in the colourful displays by the Five Ibile divisions, where over 200 boats from Lagos’ indigenous communities will take us on a journey of cultural brilliance.”
The regatta was billed to be celebrated in honour of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as Special Guest of Honour on the Five Cowries lagoon water of Lagos, but was reduced to a muted low-key event when the Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu cancelled his attendance due to the loss of lives as a result of stampedes that occurred in Okija and Abuja where palliatives were being shared.
Regatta troupes from different local governments of the state, including Badagry, Ikorodu, Epe in their colourful costumes had converged on the headquarters of the Lagos State Water Authority (LASWA), the take off point for the regatta, but the announcement of cancellation of engagements by President Tinubu dampened the festival.
The Presidency had issued a release on Saturday, December 21 morning commiserating with the victims of the unfortunate incidents in Anambra and the Federal Capital Territory, President Tinubu urged states and relevant authorities to enforce strict crowd control measures immediately.
Boat regatta festival in Lagos is a traditional festival celebrated by different riverine communities in Eko, Ikeja, Badagry, Ikorodu, and Epe. The regatta is rooted in the aquatic endowments and spirituality of Lagos people.
