The Lagos State Government has issued a traffic advisory ahead of the Federal Government’s planned two-week rehabilitation of the Kara Bridge along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, warning motorists to prepare for temporary traffic disruptions from Tuesday, July 28.
The advisory, issued on Monday by the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation, said the Federal Ministry of Works will commence the replacement of the expansion joint on the bridge as part of ongoing efforts to improve the safety and structural integrity of one of Nigeria’s busiest transport corridors.
According to the ministry, the repair works will run for two weeks and require the temporary reduction of the existing four-lane carriageway to two lanes over a 1.5-kilometre stretch around the Kara axis.
In a statement, the ministry said: “The Lagos State Ministry of Transportation wishes to notify the motoring public that the Federal Ministry of Works will commence the replacement of the expansion joint at Kara Bridge along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. The project is scheduled to commence on Tuesday, 28th July, 2026 for a period of two weeks. Consequently, motorists are advised to expect partial traffic disruptions around the Kara axis during the repair period.”
The ministry explained that the temporary lane restriction is necessary to provide a safe working environment for construction personnel while ensuring traffic continues to flow throughout the rehabilitation period.
It noted that moderate traffic congestion is expected around the Fatgbems Turn area as some motorists divert or make U-turns to avoid delays. However, traffic travelling beyond Fatgbems Turn towards Ibadan is expected to experience only minimal disruption.
Motorists have been advised to plan their journeys ahead, consider alternative routes where possible and comply strictly with traffic regulations and directives issued by traffic management officials deployed along the corridor.
The ministry appealed for patience and cooperation from road users, stressing that the rehabilitation is aimed at improving the durability, safety and reliability of the bridge for millions of commuters who rely on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway daily.
Kara Bridge remains one of the busiest sections of the expressway, serving as a critical gateway connecting Lagos with Ogun State and several states across the South-West and northern parts of the country.
The latest intervention forms part of the Federal Ministry of Works’ ongoing maintenance programme on the expressway. In March 2026, the ministry carried out similar maintenance on the outbound Lagos section of Kara Bridge, while in May 2025 it embarked on emergency palliative repairs on deteriorating expansion joints at the Kara, Arepo and Magboro bridges following growing safety concerns.
Those repairs came after an accident involving an 18-seater commercial bus near Arepo Bus Stop, which authorities linked to the failure of one of the affected bridge expansion joints.
The Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, Mrs Olukorede Kesha, had said the rehabilitation became necessary to restore the bridges’ structural stability, improve safety for motorists and prevent more serious structural failures in the future.
