In a significant political development ahead of the 2027 general elections, the senator representing Kwara North Senatorial District, Sadiq Suleiman Umar, has formally declared his intention to contest for the office of governor of Kwara State on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The declaration was made during his appearance on Politics Tonight, a flagship political programme on TVC News on Monday, where he spoke extensively on governance, security challenges in Kwara State and the need for electoral reforms in Nigeria.

Addressing concerns over insecurity, particularly in Kwara North, Senator Sadiq acknowledged that communities in the district have been significantly affected.

However, he commended the joint interventions of the Kwara State Government under Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq and the Federal Government led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, noting that coordinated efforts with security agencies and local stakeholders are gradually restoring peace and stability.

According to him, enhanced intelligence-gathering, improved inter-agency collaboration and sustained grassroots engagement are already yielding measurable progress.

He urged citizens to remain hopeful and continue supporting lawful efforts aimed at ending insecurity across the state.

On his governorship ambition, Senator Sadiq expressed strong confidence in his preparedness, citing over seven years of experience at the national level and his background in the development sector.

Responding directly to a question on whether he has what it takes to contest, secure the party ticket and govern effectively, he stated:

“First and foremost, thank you very much for asking me that question because already, primary elections have been scheduled in the country. So, for the records, I’m saying here now that me, Senator Sadiq Suleiman Umar,

“I am going to run for the governorship of Kwara State come 2027 on the platform of All Progressives Congress.

“I’m more than prepared to run, to win, and to govern. Because I think, Alhamdulillah, I have been in government for over seven years at the national level, and I understand the dynamics of government.

“I have worked in the development sector; I understand what development management is all about. And I can assure you that I will bring all of that to bear and I will be successful, by the grace of God.”

He further emphasised that 2027 presents an opportunity to advance fairness, equity and balanced development across Kwara’s three senatorial districts, stressing that the time is ripe for Kwara North to produce the next governor of the state.
