Former Kano State governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has formally defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), marking a significant shift in Nigeria’s evolving opposition politics ahead of the 2027 elections.

Kwankwaso, who was the presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in 2023, completed his registration at Gidan Kwankwasiyya in Kano, where he was issued his membership card in the presence of party leaders and supporters.

Confirming the move, he wrote on his X handle: “New Dawn. We are ADC.”

The event drew several prominent political figures, including former Anambra State governor Peter Obi, former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi, and former Sokoto State governor Aminu Tambuwal.

Also in attendance were former Senate President David Mark, who currently serves as ADC National Chairman, and the party’s National Secretary, Rauf Aregbesola.

Others present included Senator Dino Melaye, former APC National Chairman John Odigie-Oyegun, and former Imo State Governor Emeka Ihedioha.

The gathering was largely attended by members of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, reflecting Kwankwaso’s enduring political base in Kano.

His defection comes after months of speculation and political manoeuvring around a possible opposition coalition, with earlier reports indicating that talks between Kwankwaso and the ADC had been ongoing but unresolved.

More details are expected to emerge in the coming days as the implications of the move begin to unfold.
