Kuje jailbreak: Nwachukwu’s cell was not broken by Boko Haram, says NCoS

Federal Government, yesterday, debunked reports that Osinachi Nwachukwu’s husband, Peter, was among the escapees from Kuje Prisons, saying that his cell was one of  the VIP cells that was not broken into.

Speaking with Daily Sun, in Abuja, the Public Relations Officer of the Correctional Service,  Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Command, Mr Humphrey Chukwuedo, told Daily Sun that when the story began to trend in the social media, he personally drove to the centre where  he met him (Peter) and spoke with him.

“I am just from there. I spoke with him. What you heard is not true. As I speak with you I am driving out of the prison. I spoke with him. So, it is not true” he said.

Another highly-placed  officer of the service confirmed Chukwuedo’s submission, saying that Peter Nwachukwu’s cell  was among the Very Important Persons (VIP) cells that the bandits could not break.

Recall that a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Wuse had on June 3 remanded Nwachukwu at the Kuje Correctional Centre, pending the hearing and determination of the homicide-related suit instituted against him by the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF).
His wife died on April 8, 2022 and many of her colleagues had accused her husband of subjecting the deceased to domestic violence, leading to her death.
Nwachukwu was alleged to have kicked Osinachi in the chest, leading to a blood clot that eventually killed her.

According to the Nigeria Correctional Sercive (NCoS), 879 inmates escaped from the facility after the bombardment by those suspected to be Boko Haram terrorist group.
A total of 879 inmates escaped from the facility during the unfortunate attack.

Meanwhile, 443 have been recaptured, 551 inmates are currently in custody, 4  inmates have been declared dead and 16 inmates sustained various degrees of injuries and are being treated at the moment.

“However, efforts are ongoing to recapture all fleeing inmates,” spokesperson for the Nigerian Correctional Service, Umar Abubakar, had said.
