South Korean Ambassador to Nigeria, Amb. Jeong Yo-An, was among 90 golfers who took to the fairways on Saturday as the League of African Ambassadors Golf Tournament got underway at the Ibom Golf Course, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
Amb. Jeong Yo-An, playing off a handicap of 23, competed in the same flight with his wife, Sarah Yo-An, former Deputy Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Obong Nsima Ekere, and Ambassador Ben Okoyen, Chairman of the tournament’s Central Planning Committee.
The opening day attracted golfers from across Nigeria and members of the diplomatic community, with organisers recording 120 registrations for the tournament. Many of the participants travelled to Akwa Ibom for the event, which provided an opportunity for sporting interaction, business networking, diplomatic engagement and the promotion of the state as a destination.
Among the participants was veteran golfer and Professor Emeritus, Dibu Ojerinde, who described his return to the Ibom Golf Course after almost a decade as a memorable experience.
Angela Eze of Python Golf Club also praised the course and the tournament atmosphere, despite finding herself playing off a higher handicap than anticipated.
“Ibom Golf Course is the biggest course I have ever played. However, I enjoyed myself.
The cocktail and poolside party were fantastic. If the tournament is hosted again next week, I’ll be here,” Eze said.
On the competitive side of Day 1, Mayo Ajibade claimed the Men’s Longest Drive prize, while Blessing Michael emerged winner of the Ladies’ Longest Drive. Otu Ekanem won the Nearest to the Pin prize.
The tournament’s technical crew confirmed that 65 golfers qualified for Sunday’s final round after the cut was applied following Saturday’s play. The qualifiers will battle for the major laurels and prizes at stake on the closing day.
The official tee-off ceremony was conducted by Ambassador Assam Assam, setting the tournament in motion amid an impressive gathering of diplomats, business leaders, golfers and guests.
The organisers also confirmed that Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, is expected to grace the closing ceremony, award presentation and dinner scheduled for Sunday evening at the Ibom Hotel and Golf Resort.
