The outgoing Vice Chancellor of Kingsley Ozumba Mbadiwe University, Professor Ikechukwu Dozie, has officially bowed out after completing his tenure, attributing his achievements to the support of the university’s visitor, Governor Hope Uzodimma.

Addressing journalists in Owerri, the Imo State capital, Dozie said his appointment by the governor came without prior notice and served as a driving force to pursue excellence at the institution. He will assume his next office as the 49th Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO).

Reflecting on his time at KOMU, Dozie  acknowledged that his administration began amid significant challenges, including institutional transition and security concerns in the state. He said those challenges were overcome through hard work and the commitment of staff.

“I assumed office at a time of profound uncertainty. The university was in transition; confidence among stakeholders, staff, students, parents, and the wider public was fragile, and this was compounded by prevailing security challenges within the state at the time,” he said.

“Yet with the unwavering support of our visitor and the collective resilience of our university community, we confronted these challenges with clarity of purpose. We undertook the task of rebuilding, restoring academic activities, stabilising institutional processes and procedures, and setting the university on a deliberate path towards global competitiveness.”

Dozie highlighted academic accreditation as a key milestone. He said KOMU had no accredited mature programmes when he assumed office but, now, has 20 programmes with full accreditation status from the National Universities Commission (NUC).

“That transition from zero to full accreditation across core programmes represents one of the most significant academic milestones of this administration,” he said.

He also cited the restoration of the university’s matriculation tradition among other achievements during his tenure.
