Kogi to hold local council election on Oct 19

The Kogi State Independent Electoral Commission (SIEC) announced on Tuesday that elections for chairmen and councillors in the state’s 21 local government areas will be held on Saturday, 19 October 2024.

During a stakeholders’ meeting in Lokoja, SIEC Chairman Mamman Nda Eri stated that the commission has prepared a comprehensive timetable and schedule of activities to ensure a transparent, fair, and credible electoral process. This is in accordance with the Electoral Act 2010 and Section 197 of the Nigerian Constitution, which established the commission.

The timetable, presented to stakeholders on Tuesday, 16 July, outlines the following schedule:

22-23 July: Local government tours to address complaints
5-12 August: Collection of forms by aspirants and political parties
26 August: Submission of forms
30 August: Party primaries
4-11 September: Verification, documentation, objections, and claims
12 September – 17 October: Campaign period
13 September: Clearing and substitution of candidates
2 October: Deadline for submission of party agents
19 October: Election day
