Kebbi State Sickle Cell Association (KESCA), has commended the state House of Assembly under the leadership of the Speaker, Hon. Usman Muhammed Zuru, for the passing of the pre – marital bill presented before them by the Association into law.
The association, in a statement signed by the state chairperson, Hajia Hadiza Shantali, on behalf of 43 NGOs, described the passing of the bill by the state House of Assembly, as historic and a milestone achievement in the history of Kebbi State House of Assembly.
According to her: “The premarital examination will compel potential couples to undertake genotype test before getting married, which in turn will stop the spread of sickle cell diseases in the state.
“We are excited that after a very long process, at last the Kebbi State House of Assembly has passed the bill into law”.

She noted that aside from breaking sickle cell cycle diseases, it would also stop the spread of HIV/ AIDS and other inherited blood disorders in the state.
Shantali added that KESCA, alongside the 43 NGOs, has, since November 2019, presented the bill to the state Assembly for consideration and action.
“Now that it has been passed, we have decided to appreciate the efforts of some key and exceptional members for their efforts in the passage of the bill,” she added
She commended the state governor, Dr. Nasir Idris; the Speaker, Hon. Usman Muhammed, and Aminu Abubakar Gulumbe, the chairman House Committee on Health for their contributions to the passage of the bill into law.
