From Ola Muhammad, Birnin Kebbi
The Kebbi State Government, under the leadership of Governor Nasir Idris, Kauran Gwandu, has intensified measures to strengthen preparedness and prevent the possible importation and spread of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in the state.
The Permanent Secretary of the State Ministry of Health, Dr Zaki Abubakar Zaki, disclosed this in a statement made available to newsmen in Birnin Kebbi on Sunday.
He said the Ministry of Health, through its Public Health Department, had strengthened disease surveillance and screening of travellers at Sir Ahmadu Bello International Airport, Birnin Kebbi, as well as at designated land border entry points across the state.
According to him, passengers arriving at and departing from Sir Ahmadu Bello International Airport are being screened at designated arrival and departure gates to facilitate the early detection of suspected Ebola cases and identify travellers exhibiting symptoms consistent with the disease.
Zaki further disclosed that similar screening measures had been introduced at three designated land border entry points located in Bagudo, Kamba and Arewa Local Government Areas as part of the state government’s efforts to enhance border health surveillance and protect residents from potential public health threats.
He explained that the measures were designed to ensure the prompt identification of suspected cases, timely referral for further medical assessment and the implementation of appropriate public health interventions to minimise the risk of disease transmission.
The state Ministry of Health has also provided all general hospitals in the state with personal protective equipment.
The state government reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the health and well-being of residents through proactive disease surveillance, strengthened border screening and effective coordination with relevant health authorities and other stakeholders.
It also urged residents and travellers to remain vigilant, cooperate with health officials and promptly report any suspected symptoms to the appropriate health authorities.
