Kebbi State governor, Dr Nasir Idris, has inaugurated a new Governing Council for the Abdullahi Fodio University of Science and Technology, Aliero (AFUSTA).

The inauguration followed the dissolution of the previous council over unresolved internal crises.

Inaugurating the council at the Government House, Birnin Kebbi, Idris charged members to resolve all outstanding issues confronting the institution.

The state government had, on May 1, 2026, dissolved the university’s governing council and removed the Vice Chancellor as well as the two Deputy Vice Chancellors in charge of academic and administration, following the recommendations of a visitation panel.

The new council is chaired by Prof. Muhammad Abubakar Kaoje, who also serves as the Pro-Chancellor, while the university’s Registrar will serve as Secretary to the Council.

Other members include the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research), the Permanent Secretaries of the Ministries of Higher Education and Justice, four Senate representatives, two Congregation representatives, one representative of the National Universities Commission (NUC), and one representative from each of the state’s three senatorial districts.

Idris recalled that his administration dissolved the former council and removed the vice chancellor to restore stability to the university.

“I know 90 per cent of the council members, including Professor Kaoje, who was the pioneer vice chancellor of the university. I congratulate the government and members of the council. With the calibre of people appointed, the crisis in the university is over. Government will support you to succeed,” he said.

The governor assured the council of his administration’s support, saying his doors would remain open whenever assistance was required.

Responding, Kaoje assured the governor that the council would discharge its responsibilities with honesty and regularly consult the government on important issues.
